St. Paul Ice

There were a lot of days where we didn't have crabbers coming into port, for one reason or another. Several times, we had a spell of three or four days when none came in, and the chunks of ice in the harbor froze into a solid sheet.   Cut it into squares, and push it out of the harbor.   I cleared the entire harbor by pushing 5 pieces of ice out.   This one is about 180 yards left to right, and 200 yards or so long.  Couldn't get one any wider than that out of the harbor, because of the distance between the east breakwater and the north dock.   I did get one piece out, and then pushed a second one out and rammed the first one.   My deckhand said, 'Congratulations, Dave, you just made the state of Rhode Island in the Bering Sea.'
My mate, engineer, and I kinda made it a contest, who can push the biggest, or, the fun one, how many pieces the size of a car or smaller can you balance on the bow and push out of the harbor?  Push a group of marbles across the floor with a pencil. No, we weren't bored...
