Working on across the cliff, and we found a willow tree trying to grow.   Notice the layers of sediment, and how the face is flaking off.   It's caused by water dissolving the salts that hold the grains of sand together.   The salt is still acting as cement just under the surface.   The salts drying on the surface of the rocks is what makes desert varnish, that black coating.
